The Recertification Module is BCSP’s enhanced solution designed to simplify and support the recertification process for credential holders, who are required to recertify every five years to maintain their certification. This user-friendly platform allows individuals to easily upload documentation from any device—laptop, tablet, or phone—and guides them step-by-step through the entire process. It provides real-time updates on points earned, helping users track their progress with confidence and clarity.

With an intuitive interface and streamlined functionality, the Recert Module makes staying certified easier, faster, and more accessible than ever.

BACKGROUND

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) is a not-for-profit corporation based in Indianapolis, Indiana, established in 1969. For over five decades, BCSP has been dedicated to setting and certifying the technical competency standards for safety, health, and environmental practitioners. Learn more about BCSP.

I joined BCSP in October 2020 as the sole designer on the Software Application Development team, which includes 5 developers and one manager with support from 3 project managers. In this role, I am responsible for overseeing accessibility, usability, and providing implementation support for all software products developed by the team.

UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM

Users found the original recertification application difficult to navigate, lacking the intuitive design needed for a smooth experience. The process was confusing, requiring multiple steps and unclear instructions to submit activities. One of the most significant pain points was the inability to upload supporting documentation directly through the system, forcing users to find workarounds or seek help. Additionally, the platform was not mobile friendly, limiting flexibility and preventing users from managing their recertification on mobile devices. These challenges created frustration and unnecessary barriers for users trying to maintain their certification.

Built by a third party, the platform lacked flexibility—making updates or the addition of new features a slow and cumbersome process.

THE SOLUTION

The redesigned Recertification Module offers a streamlined, user-centered experience that eliminates the frustrations of the previous system. With a clean, intuitive interface, the new platform features:

Step-by-step guidance and instructional videos to support users throughout the process—without ever needing to leave the system.
Designed for flexibility, users can submit activities at their own pace, whether gradually over the five-year cycle or all at once near the deadline.
Real-time point tracking helps users stay informed, while automatic submission triggers once the required points are met—ensuring timely review and approval without the risk of over submitting.
The platform is fully mobile-friendly and allows users to upload supporting documentation directly from any device, making recertification simple, efficient, and accessible from anywhere.
