ROLE

Usability Specialist

Interaction, Visual design, Prototyping

February 2021 - August 2024

BACKGROUND

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) is a not-for-profit corporation based in Indianapolis, Indiana, established in 1969. For over five decades, BCSP has been dedicated to setting and certifying the technical competency standards for safety, health, and environmental practitioners. Learn more about BCSP.

I joined BCSP in October 2020 as the sole designer on the Software Application Development team, which includes 5 developers and one manager with support from 3 project managers. In this role, I am responsible for overseeing accessibility, usability, and providing implementation support for all software products developed by the team.

UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM

Group Account Managers (GAMs) faced significant challenges when it came to managing their credential holders effectively. One of the primary pain points was the lack of centralized communication and visibility. Credential holders received individual notifications regarding their applications, exams, and renewals, leaving GAMs out of the loop. As a result, GAMs were frequently required to follow up with employees directly, leading to inefficiencies and gaps in oversight.

In addition, there was no streamlined way for GAMs to track payments, manage certification statuses, or view historical records in one convenient location. For those managing multiple groups or organizations, the process became even more complex. Keeping track of different teams and their associated data required constant back-and-forth with BCSP staff, including requests for custom reports—adding to the administrative burden and limiting autonomy.

This fragmented experience highlighted the need for a more cohesive, user-centered solution that would empower GAMs to oversee their credential holders with clarity, control, and confidence.

THE SOLUTION

The Group Management Expansion (GME) was developed to give Group Account Managers (GAMs) the tools they need to efficiently manage their credentialed employees. With GME, GAMs now have a centralized, user-friendly platform that offers full visibility and control over their group’s certification activities.

  • GAMs can view all credential holders within their organization, based on assigned permissions, making oversight and support easier and more effective.

  • GAMs can pay for all BCSP products and associated fees on behalf of individuals or the entire group, streamlining the billing process.

  • The tool allows GAMs to generate tailored reports to meet their organization’s unique tracking and compliance needs.

  • Easily track application progress, certification renewals, and important deadlines, all in one dashboard.

  • Designed to support GAMs who manage multiple teams, the system keeps information organized and accessible.
